Arie Trouwborst, geboren in 1975, zijn inaugurele rede. Hij is sinds 1 maart 2023 hoogleraar natuurbeschermingsrecht aan de Universiteit van Tilburg. De inaugurele rede biedt waardevolle inzichten in het perspectief van een professor die zijn leven zal wijden aan de studie van natuurbeschermingsrecht.<\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text_size=”” text_uppercase=”” uncode_shortcode_id=”704088″]De \u2018Serengeti-regels\u2019 voor duurzame ecosystemen[\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”355603″]Professor dr. Arie Trouwborst introduceerde in zijn inaugurale rede het concept van de ‘Serengeti-regels’, een term ge\u00efntroduceerd door bioloog Sean Carroll. Deze regels sturen het evenwicht in ecosystemen en bepalen de diversiteit en abundantie van soorten. Ze omvatten onder meer territorialiteit, concurrentie, voedselvoorziening, predatie, ziekte en migratie – allemaal cruciale factoren die bijdragen aan een bloeiend ecosysteem.<\/p>\n

Arie Trouwborst benadrukte dat de natuur fundamentele wetten volgt, niet alleen in natuurkunde en scheikunde, maar ook in de levende wereld, van celniveau tot complete ecosystemen. Hij illustreerde dit met het voorbeeld van de grote lijster, die door zijn territoriale gedrag onbewust bijdraagt aan effici\u00ebnt hulpbronnenbeheer en populatiecontrole.<\/p>\n

Helaas, zo stelde professor Trouwborst, hebben mensen zich van deze ecologische regels verwijderd. Door exclusieve claims op land en zee, intolerantie jegens andere soorten, en het negeren van de Serengeti-regels, hebben we ecosystemen drastisch veranderd en soms zelf vernietigd. Hij waarschuwde voor een dreigende biodiversiteitscrisis, waarbij mensen en vee nu 96% van de biomassa van landzoogdieren uitmaken.<\/p>\n

Om deze crisis het hoofd te bieden, pleitte hij voor een transformatieve verandering in menselijk gedrag. Hij benadrukte het belang van natuurbehoud en -herstel, en wees op de cruciale rol van natuurbeschermingsrecht. Dit recht stelt ons in staat wettelijke grenzen te stellen aan menselijke activiteiten die de natuur schaden.<\/p>\n

Arie Trouwborst onderstreepte dat natuurbeschermingsrecht de intrinsieke waarde van biodiversiteit erkent. Het stelt dat alle levensvormen respect verdienen, los van hun nut voor de mens. Hij bepleitte stevige wettelijke kaders om het ‘shifting baseline syndrome’ tegen te gaan – de geleidelijke acceptatie van natuuraantasting.<\/p>\n

Bovendien wees hij op het groeiende belang van natuurbeschermingsrecht in het licht van nieuwe inzichten in het bewustzijn en de autonomie van niet-menselijke wezens. Dit verdiept ons begrip van de intrinsieke waarde van wilde dieren.<\/p>\n
